Dev Blog: Week 6

Project Summary

This week we updated our art assets and have a more developed gameplay. The main focus of this week is to adjust the game to be able to playtest in Hunt Library and prepare for 1/2 presentation.

Current Schedule

  • Weekly new build on Monday
  • Playtest at Hunt Library on Tuesday night
  • Prepare for 1/2 presentation

What went well

  • Playtest on Hunt Library

Design Update

We decided to add manual attacks for the player to make the game more engaging because some people may think staring at the screen and letting the turret shoot by itself is too boring. We want to add this feature to engage the player’s interest more and make the game fun to diverse types of players.

Art Update

This is the updated version of the art assets. The textures are added for the enemy. There will be different colors of the enemy and different shapes of enemy that will be developed later. The turret’s texture are changed to better match the enemy and be coherent with the over all theme of the game.

The book on the right is the object the player protecting the enemy against. In the future we will add content of the book to be about each bridge’s history. This is how we make use of the uniqueness of each bridge.

Programming Update

Playtest in Hunt Library

We playtested in Hunt Library on Tuesday Night. We scanned the hallway in advance and adjusted the direction of the enemy based on the position of the Library and recorded playback for debugging in advance. We had several playtests and got some feedback that we will iterate our design on.

The red button is used for manual attack. Player can aim at the enemy using the camera and hit the red button to shoot.

Contextual Awareness

We tried out the contextual awareness feature that Lightship ARDK has. We modified this feature so that it will count the grass. This video shows that every time player click the screen when it’s recognize the grass, the grass count will increase by one. This maybe used later for collecting material before going onto the bridge and the material can be used for recharging the turret.
