Week 4: Feb 5, 2024 – Feb 9, 2024

Design Direction:

This week we have discussed and come up with a final version of our user flow and a interaction storyboard of how we would like the experience to be played. We set our game into three stages: 1890 (beginning of Chinatown), 1930 (prosperous era of Chinatown), and 1960 till present (the downside era of Chinatown).

User Flow

We created a user interaction for our project. The player can scan the ArilTag to view the scene and tap on the screen to interact the mini games we will further develop.

Art Direction:

We will keep research on map of the past Pittsburgh Chinatown. Our intention is to record the change of Chinatown based on our narrative. Our next step is to create art concepts for both era that we are going to iterate based on the history.

Tech Direction:

For tech this week, we implemented the table we made as our platform for the whole experience and figure out the ARENA API. We also researched and implemented the art pipeline in ARENA as well as the unity live link that could work for a scene editor. For the art pipeline, we figured out the how Maya and Blender’s Substance Painter can turned into GLB. We also figured out the capacity of the polygons can be fitted in into ARENA (Building, ideal target = 25k polys and Table, ideal target = 2.5k polys). As a major development, we work through the python script system for our scene controller.

As for April Tag and AR, we figured out what will work best with Android Device (Pixel 8, 60fps, no issue (see video)). Our AR works on iOS, but with some caveats. In Safari, our scene has no movement tracking. And the last in XR Browser, our landscape Mode works great, but our Portrait Mode is buggy with some performance issue.

As for Next Week:

  • Design: We will be focusing more detailed narrative and storyboard.
  • Art: We will find more research for the past architectures of Chinatown & basic NPCs.
  • Tech: We will working on the Multiplayer aspects and avatar for the users.
