Preparing for 1/4s

After returning and resting from the Florida trip, we revisited our ideas with consideration of the feedback we received from Ian. We decided that for quarters we would narrow down to our top three ideas and get feedback from the faculty on each, focusing on how we can better tweak them to fit with the design pillars we had previously defined.

After iterating and creating some slides/simple animations to aid our conversations on Friday. We shared these slides with Ian and Christie for additional input.

Michelle also completed the first draft of our logo and poster!

1/4s Walkarounds

Overall 1/4s went well! We began by giving each faculty group background information about the WonderLab, the task we were presented with and the design criteria from our client. Then we gave brief descriptions of each of the three ideas we’re deciding between.

Wonder Run

Pros:

  • Augmenting existing platform is a safer choice than creating something from scratch
  • It can be very collaborative
  • There is a lot of room to play and explore

Cons:

  • How do we allow kids to have agency while giving them a goal
  • Potentially expensive installation
  • What is the narrative?

Wonder Path

Pros:

  • Less expensive install
  • Intriguing, interesting to children
  • Strong Goal
  • Body as a path is a good starting point

Cons:

  • Too much like a video game
  • Doesn’t really include much STEAM in its current state – could incorporate our color mixing ideas
  • Concerned about accessibility and physical payoff since this is a tech only concept
  • Think about other ways to augment the puzzle portal other than just screens

BotMania

Pros:

  • Interesting to children
  • Very educational
  • Like the idea of showing animation wireframe
  • Likes the tie to stop motion
  • Good use of IP

Cons:

  • Could be TOO educational, the other ideas seem more fun immediately
  • Single player experience

In general, the faculty seemed to lean more towards BotMania and WonderRun, as WonderPath was too game-like. They suggested that as we finalize these ideas we think about creating a non-linear experience as kids enjoy making their own goals when playing games. We will take into consideration all the feedback we received and make a decision quickly so that we can start building a prototype.

Priorities For Next Week:

  • Connect with Christie
  • Test kinect performance with wheelchair usage so that we know if that is a viable platform
  • Make final decision on the direction and begin developing a prototype
