In the process, we reached out to subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure the scientific accuracy of our environmental themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Consultation with Danielle Rhea \u2013 Penn State Extension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-49329d62 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"606\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.etc.cmu.edu\/ecovision\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Rhea.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-642\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">We were fortunate to connect with Danielle Rhea, an Extension Educator at Penn State Extension, who provided detailed feedback and resources related to small backyard water features. Her insights helped us accurately frame the third level of our game\u2014the \u201cpuddle\u201d level, which simulates an ornamental pond or water garden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\">Key takeaways from her response:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\" class=\"wp-block-list has-small-font-size\">\n<li>Our water feature (a 1-meter-wide puddle) aligns more closely with ornamental ponds, not traditional ponds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Native plants, biological filtration, and water movement are essential for supporting wildlife and controlling algae\/mosquitoes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nutrient control is critical\u2014excess fish food, fallen leaves, or runoff can lead to algae overgrowth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Methods like barley straw and shade placement can further help manage pond health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rainfall alone may not be enough to maintain water levels, especially during dry seasons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to her help, we were able to adjust our content to accurately reflect real-world ecological processes, ensuring that our puddle level offers meaningful and achievable learning experiences for players aged 9\u201312.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Follow-up with Amberlee Bozic \u2013 Natural Resources Specialist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">We also reconnected with Amberlee Bozic, who had previously advised us on ecosystem and soil interactions. While finalizing dialogue for the first level (focused on leaf decomposition), we had two key questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\" class=\"wp-block-list has-small-font-size\">\n<li>Is it scientifically reasonable for leaves to decompose between autumn and winter?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does leaf placement affect the decomposition process?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\">Her response confirmed that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\" class=\"wp-block-list has-small-font-size\">\n<li>Yes, it is reasonable to set the game in autumn, as leaves begin decomposing immediately after they fall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decomposition accelerates in winter and spring, especially with the help of moisture, temperature, shredding, or composting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leaf placement does affect decomposition\u2014areas with direct sunlight and moisture help, but adding leaves to compost is most effective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Based on this, we decided to remove a confusing line of dialogue instructing players to place leaves in sunny areas. This may confuse players because the leaf will automatically be placed in a specific location when the player approaches it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Dialogue Finalization Complete<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">After implementing all SME feedback, we officially <strong>completed the game\u2019s full dialogue<\/strong> this week. This not only improves the <strong>clarity of player instruction<\/strong> but also ensures our content is <strong>scientifically sound<\/strong>, aligning with our educational goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re incredibly thankful to both Danielle Rhea and Amberlee Bozic for their generous support and thoughtful input.
