Welcome to our dev blogs!
Before diving into our first week’s work, here’s a little background on our project: We are Team Encore! We are collaborating with CMU’s School of Drama to create and install an immersive, interactive experience for Titanic the Musical in the lobby of the Purnell Center for the Arts.
Project Kick-off
We had our first instructor meeting with Shirley on Monday, Jan. 13th, where we discussed about our roles and goals, what the project entails, etc. After the meeting, we started research and brainstorming in preparation for the first client meeting.
Brainstorm
Based on our research, we began brainstorming ideas that incorporate multi-sensory elements to create an immersive and atmospheric environment. Here are some of the concepts we developed:
- Handed Titanic ticket
- Interact with characters’ luggage (differentiate first class and third class luggage)
- Letters from characters
- Scale model of ship
- LED lights on programmable winches
- Messages in bottles
- Ocean floor lighting with gobos
- Changing space at end of show (change to sunken ship)
- Fans for wind effects
-
Lighting effect with fabric
Client Meeting
We continued to research on the musical characters and refined interaction design based on the feedback we received during the meeting.

Next Steps:
- Visit Chosky theater and get floor plan
- Build on the brainstormed ideas
- Research more on the musical and history
- Create equipment and budget list
