Welcome to our dev blogs!<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Before diving into our first week’s work, here\u2019s a little background on our project: We are Team Encore<\/strong>! We are collaborating with CMU\u2019s School of Drama to create and install an immersive, interactive experience\u00a0for Titanic<\/em> <\/strong>the Musical <\/em>in the lobby of the Purnell Center for the Arts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Project Kick-off<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

We had our first instructor meeting with Shirley on Monday, Jan. 13th, where we discussed about our roles and goals, what the project entails, etc. After the meeting, we started research and brainstorming in preparation for the first client meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on our research, we began brainstorming ideas that incorporate multi-sensory elements to create an immersive and atmospheric environment. Here are some of the concepts we developed:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Handed Titanic ticket<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Interact with characters\u2019 luggage (differentiate first class and third class luggage)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Letters from characters<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Scale model of ship<\/span><\/li>\n
  • LED lights on programmable winches<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Messages in bottles<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Ocean floor lighting with gobos<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Changing space at end of show (change to sunken ship)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Fans for wind effects\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n

    Client Meeting<\/span><\/h2>\n
    We had our first meeting with our clients, TJ and Lillian from the Drama Department, on Wednesday. During the discussion, we shared our ideas, learned more about the musical, and explored their expectations for the experience. They emphasized that the musical aims to deliver a historically accurate yet highly theatrical and immersive environment and want us to help acclimate the audience and prepare them for the show. They appreciated the concepts of the boarding pass chip and luggage and encouraged us to highlight the disparity between classes and their contrasting experiences.<\/span><\/div>\n

    We continued to research on the musical characters and refined interaction design based on the feedback we received during the meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
