Week 3

This is the Quarter Week!!

During the last week, we were talking about the possible gameplay elements and climate change problems that could be included into the experience.

Since we cannot include everything we considered, we picked 3 main climate change problems.

  • High temperature: during winter, raised water level swept salmon carcasses.
  • Droughts: They like to drink water in the shallow river areas.
  • Wildfire: need to change their perches.

As for the game design, we structured the game into 3 stages:

And we finished our first blockout draft in Maya, and moved it into Unity for playtesting.

We also showcased the visual references we got to the faculties.

Problems that we are having based on the feedback:

  1. Climate change problems are not strong enough.
    1. Wildfires sometimes is caused by humans.
    2. The change in migration patterns is strongly related to climate change.
  2. Which aspect to stress more? a captivating game that communicates climate change issues, or a game that prioritizes depicting climate change problems with utmost clarity but sacrifices some entertainment value?
  3. Play more flying games ourselves.
  4. Friday 12:30-2:00 RPIS to talk about the eagle.

Narrative suggestion:

  1. Documentary voiceover to help tell the story, since the eagles do not speak.
  2. If want to add wildfire, tell the audience how it happens. Caused by lightning?
  3. The tutorial part could be faster; move the storytelling to the main part.
  4. Realistic. Eagle catches fish by diving and using their claw. They take the food back to their home. (?)
  5. Have sound effects and lights to help communicate the story.
  6. The transition from the tutorial to the second stage should mainly tell people about the environmental changes. Should not focus that much on showing the eagle grows up.

Technical aspect for playtesting:

  1. Tape the sensor on Quest to prevent it from getting into sleeping mode.
  2. Consider the gesture. After flapping, are we gonna let people stand still? Could consider making more use of the controllers.
