Week 12 [Soft Opening!] – April 11th, 2025

As the demo project shall have most of the features implemented, now the main focus is wrapping up everything, making sure the features run smoothly, and functioning logistically and friendly. Artists were adjusting visual effects, refining models and animation, UI text & icons; the programmer was implementing interactions with animation and feedback, adjusting & debugging; adding more sound effects to enhance the immersive experience. We also ran through the casting for Meta quest in order to live stream the view during the Soft Opening. As a backup plan, having a recorded video of the build run through is always safe.

Soft Opening! Travel-in-X

Our guests all loved the mixed reality experience of blending the physical environment with the virtual world we built up-

  • Love the view of the window, seeing the whole new world outside.
  • Love using the vision gate to explore another world outside the room, behind the physical walls.
  • Size contrast is so interesting, immersive, and engaging. Fun to interact with.
  • Nice the experience of getting players to look up in mixed reality.
  • Delight and adorable to see in World 4: 2D drawings change to 3D models to hold in hand, being able to enlarge or shrink the models are fun to play with.
  • Love the gravity of the rice dropping.
  • The virtual giant monster breaks into the actual world and “break” through the physical walls.
  • Travel console: the portals are fun to look into.

To improve-

  • Don’t be afraid of giving enough instructions.
  • Find a way to end each world.
  • Better phrasing for UI on Collector, Travel console
  • UX for Vision gate and Travel console, need to be more intuitive
    • Use the vision gate to find the item that the collector need to place on and extract = connect the two tools together
  • Seeing the window is cool, but wish to have more objects outside to add dimension.
  • Want to see virtual things interacting with the physical world.
  • Scanning the space – find different room, layout by hand and figure out how to procedurally process it
  • More foreshadowing of the tension coming up (giant monster)
  • Focus some more details of the experience: audio feedback, interface, player identity in the world.
  • Travel console facing the window so that players see the traveling process

Goals after Soft

  • Choose the things that are about making the mixed reality experience better
  • Enhance the interactions, core mechanics design
  • Conclude what works well, what are the limitations
