Week 2 [Design!] – January 24th, 2025

Week two starts with many brainstorming ideas. Pitches, prompts, proposals.

Themes & ideas

Welcome to Wonderland – a world fulfill with imaginative and weird creatures and characters, letting players to have fun, interact with the characters, build their own world, solve puzzles to unlock next space ( some characters can come from past projects and bvw worlds)

Never lose the childlike wonder. It’s just too important. It’s what drives us.” – Randy Pausch

Potential interaction:

  • Grab the objects (big blocks)
  • Interact with the characters ( poke the characters to trigger interactions, hug, dance, follow the player), combining with passthrough, character can be outside windows
  • Grab the blocks of the trial to complete the broken trial, and then take the mini train to break the brick wall to next space
The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something” – Randy Pausch
  • The player can hear two quotes and get two notes

More design ideas of interactions:

  • Night: Hide behind desks and walls to avoid being found by monsters
  • Day: Try guiding monsters to help perform some tasks, (gaze follow and high five?
  • Danger: Monster crash the window, arms reaching into the room
  • Find, interact and communicate with little creatures, gain their trust step by step
  • Find cues and discover the mystery behind the house, as well as solution to this crisis.
  • Puzzle solving/ finding objects
  • Look through the black boxes and see things inside
  • Collect and assemble “memory fragments,” represented as glowing objects hidden in the hallways
  • Interact with the mini dust/ creatures on the ground
  • Open the virtual door to see what’s behind of it
  • Moving pictures hanging on the wall
  • Look through the window to see the world outside
  • Environmental Transformation
  • Musical Puzzle – Use fragments of melody found in the environment to reconstruct the siren’s broken song (can play with Siren’s song as a gameplay
  • Choose to follow Siren’s instructions in her song or not listening. Decide whether to free the siren and let the island collapse, or abandon her to save yourself
scale of theming design control- vote

The team votes for the theming focus on the scale. We decided to try some combinations of cute and a bit mysterious style.

With a list of potential interactions to start the prototyping process, we are designing and coming up with some possible stories, moving around the “jigsaw puzzles”, and creating a complete image eventually.

Playtest: find places that two rooms are joining/ connecting

Next week:

  • Preparing for 1/4
  • Designing interactions for sprints, create list of art assets and technical actions
