Q&A
Q: Who is Level Up for?
A: Level Up is an internal project for the ETC pitched by Professor Heather Kelley to assist a new ETC course, Level Design, starting in Fall 2023. This project aims to create a UE5 plug-in that’s beginner-friendly, which includes content to help student designers to lay out a 3D white box game level without having to create art assets or code.
A: Yes… and No. Ultimately we are making a plugin toolkit for UE5, which allow users to create a playable game level with a list of prefab we provide. However, we are planning on building an example level that’s included in the plugin.
Q: Are you making a game?
A: Yes… and No. Ultimately we are making a plugin toolkit for UE5, which allow users to create a playable game level with a list of prefab we provide. However, we are planning on building an example level that’s included in the plugin.
Q: What genre is this “game”/tool?
A: It would be a tool to create a third-person environmental traversal, single-player game level. Featuring a speedy character with a staff/pole to help them overcome obstacles.
Q: Do I need programming knowledge to use this tool?
A: Not necessarily. A basic understanding of game engines, especially Unreal Engine 5, would be beneficial. We will be providing a list of pre-written scripts/blueprints. The goal is for level-design beginners to mock up a game level without having to code individually functionally. However, there are advanced features that seasoned designers could use to better their designs.
