Week 4: Playable Level Design

  • by

Summary:

We proposed three different level design ideas to instructors and decided on one of them to move on with. We built selected interactive objects, basic character movement, animation, and functions. With these tasks completed, we were able to build our level design demo.

Level Up: Playable Level Demo01

Design:

We finalized the three design pitches and discussed them with our instructors. Here are the designs:

Design 1

Design 2

Design 3

We love giving our player character a staff in Design 1. This gives us more opportunities to create a library of exciting interactions for future users, which comes with many challenges. Our team decided to face these challenges with passion and take this design to the next level.

Art:

This week we built more environmental assets and imported the necessary assets, materials, and animation into our game level. Check out the youtube video linked above!

Programming:

On the programming side, we implemented event triggers, animator controllers, and interactive objects. Some triggered events were placed in the level with a placeholder.

Production:

As a team of six, we are happy with our progress. However, there’s still a long way to go. We also had some hiccups on progress tracking since some functions and assets tasks were not individually listed. We plan to do Standup meetings where the team tracks and moves tasks regularly.

Looking Ahead:

We are looking to have more detailed task tracking, and visual updates, preferably.

Completion of the current level we are building.

Packing these features, code, and assets into the plugin we built will be our top priority in the near future.

Set up the expectation of playtesting.
