Week 12: Softs Presentations

This week, Mic Check is primarily focusing on implementing small changes to add more indirect control before Softs. Softs is an opportunity for faculty to play our game and give us feedback as the semester comes to a close.

We’ve been adding more animation and UI components and iterating on the scoring system. These are in an attempt to show the players how to win the game. Small adjustments to the sound and environment are also being put into place.

Feedback from Softs:

Summary:

I’ve outlined the details of Soft below, but to summarize, we’re getting closer to a satisfying product. We’re the little changes to the UI and scripting did increase the indirect control. We’re also giving the player better feedback on their raps, and the scoring is more accurate.

Overall, the game is fun and visually engaging. There’s a lot of potential in our game design, and we as a team need to figure out where we want to invest our time. Do we work on polishing the current design, or do we try to make another level?

General Feedback:

  • The UI is really cool and catchy! Maybe add a shader to help connect the 3D with 2D
  • Art is scaled nicely, and there is a nice sense of space
  • The hater profile thinks the player is a fan, which is a little disorienting
  • Kinda feel like you’re talking with a person
  • Calling Sky G the O.G is a little disorienting
  • Feels like a puzzle game or like there’s a right or wrong word for the fill in the blanks
  • “Regenerate” button feels too “AI”
  • This game is designed to be played in a longer setting
  • Maybe suggest a rhyme scheme
  • Could use more audience feedback
  • Maybe add spell check
  • This could be a mobile game, and we should try getting it in conferences
  • It’s hard to find out the audiences dislikes
  • The gameplay is straightforward, but we should continue to polish it in the next two weeks
  • Super fun!

Observations:

  • Most players struggle with the “what do you want to boast about line.”
  • We’re doing better on giving the player more feedback, but there is still more room to improve
  • Most players don’t know they can type
  • Most people used the AABB rhyme scheme because it was more “rap-like” than ABAB or AAAA
  • Most players understood that they needed to collect information but didn’t notice the rapbook at first
  • When players did see the rap book, they wanted to fill in the whole thing
  • Most players wanted to play again; if they didn’t score high, they wanted to do more research
  • Our 50% of players only put 1-word answers in the fill-in-the-blanks

Minor Fixes:

  • Still collider issues in the scene
  • Add “press e to interact” when riding train and when chating
  • Change “get to know fly gull” to “Enter text here” or “Type your response”
  • Add grades to round scores
  • Add percentages to audiences’ choice
  • Spelling error in boasts and disses
  • Stop Audiences from using beach/ocean metaphors
  • Add rap book animation
  • Make Fly Gull only score a B
  • Change Audience Icons
  • Make AI responses shorter
  • Edit movement speed

Design Issues:

  • How can we tell the player more about their character?
  • How can we make the scoring feel more like a performance?

Larger Tasks:

  • Maybe make the lines editable?
  • Maybe have the fill-in-blanks be a longer part of the sentence
  • Iterate on audience profiles

Next Steps:

Next week, we will decide where we want to put more of our efforts and begin preparing for the final presentation.
