Following our instructors&#8217; advice, we gave the two elderly characters names and created biographies for them to better inform the visual design and mood. We explored details like where they met and their past careers. The male character is named Oliver, and the female character is named Margaret, and we\u2019ll be referring to them by these names moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our technical artists have started working on key sections of the animation. The three main environments\u2014the kitchen, the toast galaxy, and the orange juice forest\u2014are all in progress. Lucy is using SpeedTree to design the trees for the orange juice forest, opting for a cartoon-like style with large spherical silhouettes and bright colors to enhance the fantasy atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"548\" data-id=\"53\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.etc.cmu.edu\/pulp-free-studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/SpeedTree_Modeler_XKkAlPIBfN-1024x548.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"556\" data-id=\"52\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.etc.cmu.edu\/pulp-free-studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Screenshot_2024-09-16_152447-1024x556.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Margaret has passed away in the story, we needed to convey this to the audience without dialogue. To achieve this, we decided to portray her as a ghost. Xun created a translucent material in Unreal Engine and applied it to Margaret\u2019s model, giving her a classic ghostly appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"276\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.etc.cmu.edu\/pulp-free-studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-1024x276.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, we also received the cleaned mocap data from Justin. Our mocap specialist, William, began importing the data into Oliver&#8217;s model. Using Motion Builder, he aligned the skeleton to match the animation. After some debugging, we imported the animation into the scene, though we still needed to manually animate Oliver\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.etc.cmu.edu\/pulp-free-studio\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/mocap-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-249\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With the scene assets modified and placed, the kitchen scene has started to take shape.
