This project originally began as a virtual social experience built in Rec Room to celebrate the creative culture and achievements of Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center (ETC). Designed for ETC’s 25th anniversary, the goal was to create a shared space where alumni, students, faculty, and the broader community could gather, explore, and reconnect.
However, during development, Rec Room announced that it would shut down (School’s Out for Rec Room), which required us to shift our direction. We transitioned from Rec Room to VRChat and redefined our goal.
Instead of building a one-time event, RECreate now focuses on designing a reusable virtual ETC environment that can work across different platforms. This includes exploring how ETC’s spaces, identity, and archives can be translated into virtual scenes that support multiple use cases over time.
Through this process, we are also testing how these environments can adapt to different technical systems, models, and audience needs. RECreate is no longer just a single experience, but an ongoing exploration of how ETC virtual spaces can be designed and adapted across platforms.
