Our goal was to bring the experience to the strongest state possible for external playtesting.

Building on the issues we identified last week, we began with a long design meeting to rethink key aspects of the experience. One major outcome was the decision to introduce a more personal and specific narrative. This narrative is inspired by our teammate Melanie, whose grandmother once had a garden and taught her how to plant flowers. Drawing from this story, we developed a narration that guides guests through the gardening experience, providing clearer direction and emotional context as they interact with the installation.

Remnant_Script_RewriteDownload

We also discussed whether to include an animated silhouette of the patient within the garden as a more direct storytelling element. While this approach could make the narrative more explicit, we ultimately decided to set it aside due to scope constraints and our intention to avoid making the experience feel overly literal or didactic.

Implementing the new narrative required significant adjustments across the project. We reworked the timing of events and redefined triggers within the system, both player-driven and time-based. Given that we are already in the final month of the semester, this was a risky pivot. However, the team moved quickly to integrate these changes so that we could begin testing as soon as possible and leave room for further iteration.

We also made a small but meaningful change to how we coordinate as a team. Instead of relying solely on Notion for task tracking, we set up a physical task board in the center of our workspace. This shift made it easier for everyone to stay aligned, quickly check progress, and have more spontaneous conversations around tasks. Having a shared, visible system helped improve communication and kept the whole team more in sync during this fast-paced iteration period.

On the audio side, our sound designer developed a full narration script and generated an AI-based voiceover, which was then rapidly implemented into the experience by the programming team. Many participants struggled with onboarding, often feeling unsure about how to begin or what actions were expected of them. As a result, much of their attention shifted toward figuring out interactions rather than engaging with the narrative or emotional arc.

At the same time, the tests showed promising aspects of the experience. The dialogue was generally engaging, and players with personal connections to dementia were able to recognize and resonate with the metaphor. The final moment, where only one flower remains, also consistently drew attention and emotional focus. Moving forward, our main priority will be to improve clarity and guidance, making interactions more intuitive, strengthening feedback, and reducing ambiguity, so that players can spend less effort figuring out what to do and more time engaging with the intended emotional and narrative experience.

This week was centered around preparing for ETC Playtest Day on Saturday, when visitors from around Pittsburgh were invited to experience student projects.
