Alongside design and technical improvements, we followed up with schools and potential testing partners and prepared for ETC Playtest Day and our New York visit.

Making Scripts More Natural and Performable

We improved the generated scripts by adding a short opening narration to establish the time, place, background, and useful facts. We also refined character names, titles, and dialogue to better match the historical period and each character’s identity. Clearer goals and motivations help create stronger interactions and dramatic conflict.

Another priority was weaving academic facts into the story more naturally. Rather than having characters state lesson content as exposition, we worked on making that knowledge part of the action and conversation.

Simplifying the Interface

Building on previous playtest feedback, we added a higher-level story overview so teachers can understand the play before reading the full script. We simplified several UI elements, removed options such as Musical mode, and continued refining smaller interaction details. The updated UI was brought into Unity, with implementation of the second version continuing screen by screen.

Developing the Two-Step Workflow

On the technical side, we implemented a two-step API workflow. The first call returns the full script, tasks, and stage map. Users can optionally contribute additional input for a second call, creating room for student ideas to shape the final play. We also made clickable components clearer and added prompt information for cast assignments, tasks, and props.

The Home, Teams, Class, and Lesson pages were implemented in UI Version 2. The Play, Overview, Loading, and Performing pages remained in progress.

Preparing for Playtesting

Client feedback helped us narrow the first playtest around a practical question: can students understand the script, follow staging cues, and use the prompter to complete a short performance? We also discussed preparing materials with teachers in advance to fit limited classroom time, including Dalton’s approximately 45-minute session.

The optional two-step workflow received support as a way to incorporate student contributions. Feedback also highlighted the need for a facilitator guide that supports teachers with different levels of technical confidence and accounts for limited supplies and school technology restrictions.

Looking Ahead

Our next focus is to complete the remaining interface implementation and prepare the prototype for ETC Playtest Day and the New York visit. We will use classroom testing to evaluate how well the script, staging guidance, and prompter support a short performance, while continuing to make the experience easier for teachers to facilitate.

Refining the Prototype for Classroom Testing This week, we focused on refining STAiGE’s prototype and bringing the updated interface into Unity.
