Production:

COVID hit hard on the team where two teammates were sick for 2 weeks. Following the original schedule, we would be working on Loco 7 where artists recreate the model for the wearable puppet. However, due to their absence, we decided to prioritize the La MaMa Collage where a new type of interaction was designed and replaced the existing AR video.

Design:

During last week’s playtest, many guests were confused about the use of the bench in Carmilla. It is not enough to only show a face in black overlaying the physical mask. We have been stuck on this design challenge for a few weeks and couldn’t seem to find a valid design considering the technical difficulties with 8th Wall. However, this week, we decided to try something out. To better show that actors perform behind the sofa and two main characters, we brought out the two main characters as below.

The feedback for La Marie Vison and Na Haaz Zan was good overall, with an average of 6 out of 7 rating when asked how interesting and easy the experiences and interaction designs were. 7 is very interesting and super easy. Thus, for the rest of the development time, we will move on from these two.

For this week, we spent most of our time designing experiences for La MaMa Collage. With La MaMa Collage, we shifted from the small copy in the archive to the original large collage on the second floor of the building. The collage sits outside the stage entrance and beside Cafe La MaMa, where a lot of guests will gather here before the show. This is a complete design scenario compared to artifacts in the archive because of the increase in guests, space, and noise level. To account for these, we had to remove sound from the experience, aka no more AR videos. When scanning this collage, some pictures would pop out and fly into the guests’ devices where they can read about the old days.

First drafts of the new Carmilla experience and La MaMa Collage were tested by Bokang. The image in Carmilla was further stabilized and the flying animation in La MaMa Collage was added in the following week.
