Week 6 – Prepping for Halves

The plywood has arrived! YC and William spent part of this week attaching the plywood to our whiteboard, making sure we had a good surface for our projection. This week was predominantly spent prepping both our build and presentation for Halves. Our build was created to reflect the current playfield design, shown below.

For Halves, we wanted to show our progress, our current plan, and pose questions to faculty on what we should add to our experience. Because our board is huge and the current setup is in the prototype phase, we opted to create a video for our presentation. We focused on showing off our controls and plunger, as well as the theme-switching aspect of our game.

Finally, we spent part of this week at Playtest Night. Jasmine and I went over to Hunt Library and had our game playtested on a laptop with our controls. While we had been playtesting among friends, this was the first time we were playtesting with naive guests. The data from the playtest indicated aspects we were expecting, such as the plunger being fragile and the lack of sound. Players were excited to see that we had a physical plunger and found the theme-switching fun. One player really loved the button controls, saying that smashing them “reminded them of the happiness of childhood”. This was a super-reassuring comment and meant that we were headed in the right direction.

We then utilized this playtest data and added it to our Halves presentation to showcase how players are reacting to our game. We have yet to playtest with our target audience of multigenerational families, but we were happy to be able to evoke fun in our experience so far.

Our Halves presentation is on Monday, so we continue to practice/improve our presentation!
