Week 12 – Softs Week

With Softs this week, we were preparing the game the best we could to get the most feedback from faculty. We implemented our finalized sounds into the experience, which definitely helped in creating a well-rounded pinball experience. The biggest task this week was creating achievements for the players and adding all of the new art assets. YC designed achievements based on playtest observations, and Jasmine implemented them along with a time limit, so that players could have a goal and also an end to the experience.

Meanwhile, on the art side, Cynthia, Skye, and I worked on finalizing our respective playfields. The primary parts that were missing were the gobbler, smash target, and drop target. Cynthia created Y2K-inspired pieces, Skye created Vaporwave-inspired pieces, while I created Frutiger Aero-inspired pieces. Jasmine implemented them in time for Softs, and the overall look of our pinball experience was elevated immensely with the new targets and the moving Gobbler. Finally, Skye prototyped and implemented a basic version of LED light strips, which can change color depending on the color of the ball.

We were unfortunately unable to get our second plunger ready for Softs, as David Purda was busy around this time. But outside of that, we were mostly prepared for Softs.

Our faculty’s feedback on our game primarily consisted of three points:

  • UI/UX was needed in the game to make sure the player understood what was happening
  • There was more onboarding needed for the controls
  • There needed to be more of a compelling relationship between players
  • Small art/bugs needed to be addressed

We determined from the feedback that a scoring system needed to be implemented and that we should use more UI elements to tell the player whenever they hit an achievement, and the results of the playthrough. We also came up with solutions for the relationship problem that we planned to present to the faculty next week. Overall, Softs was fairly successful, but we still had a lot to work on to take our product further.
