Week 5 – Waiting for the Plunger to Drop

After building our design and art decks last week, we were eager to hear what our instructor Scott and our Clients thought of our designs. Scott and Anthony did not have a strong preference on the art deck, but they did lean into the Modern Nostalgia theme we had within the deck, as it felt more unique and allowed for some really interesting effects. With the design deck, both of them were concerned about the inputs for our design. Our design featured physical plungers and DDR pads as the inputs. The main concern were that DDR pads don’t allow a lot of room for kids to jump next to each other, especially if kids were playing with bigger adults.

With the design feedback, we went to brainstorming what other inputs we could use. We narrowed it down to having large buttons as the input, and then we found that the ETC had recently got XBOX adaptive controllers for BVW this past year. We checked out the controllers and tested them with our current design, and they worked perfectly. After we figured out an alternate controller for our flippers, Jasmine got to work on creating the physical plunger controller. She was able to create one using sensors so that the Arduino could detect how far the plunger was pulled and shoot the pinball at the correct speed.

The Art team continued work on finalizing the theme and is currently working on playfield designs. YC worked on creating the final design for the playfield. William was out sick this week, but he spent some of his time researching VFXs that could be used with the art being implemented in the game.

Finally, we received some of our bigger materials, such as the whiteboard that we will use to mount the project on. We spent our Thursday building it, finally being able to visualize our design. We are still waiting on our plywood for the main board, but we’re excited to finally be building our project.
