About
Dots to Depth Studios explores the creative and technical potential of 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) within virtual production. Our project investigates how this emerging technique can move beyond rapid capture and into expressive, cinematic storytelling.
We are building a fully replicable pipeline from the ground up, enabling creators to film an object or environment of their choice and emerge with a fully manipulatable 3D asset inside Unreal Engine. Our pipeline is designed not just as a one-off solution, but as a framework others can adopt and build upon.
Beyond the pipeline itself, we are actively pushing the expressive boundaries of 3DGS. This includes experimenting with scale — transforming small objects into monumental spaces — exploring visual effects, such as object morphing, and blending captured footage with virtual sets and animation. These explorations allow us to test how scanned reality can be reimagined rather than merely reproduced.
At its core, this project is both research-driven and art-driven. We aim to create a polished, emotionally fluent digital piece that can captivate audiences with the same sense of awe as traditional film, while simultaneously advancing the creative vocabulary of 3D Gaussian Splatting.
Until now, 3DGS has shown us what can be captured quickly and realistically. Dots to Depth Studios asks the next questions: So what can we do with it? And where does it go next?
