Learning about 3DGS (3D Gaussian Splatting)
Definition: Unlike traditional polygon-based 3D modeling, which struggles with complex textures, Gaussian splatting uses a network of translucent blobs — Gaussians — to render objects. Each blob stores precise data on color, position, scale, rotation, and transparency. Millions of Gaussians → highly detailed and accurate 3D representation of the object or scene.
VS Photogrammetry (Photo Geometry)
Photogrammetry is a well-established method that calculates the position of points in space by matching common features across a large set of photographs to build a, often, high-polygon mesh.
| Feature | 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) | Photogrammetry |
|---|---|---|
| Output Type | Point Cloud / Volumetric | 3D Mesh (Polygons) |
| Primary Use Case | Immersive VR/AR, Real-time Visuals | Precision Scanning, 3D Printing |
| Editable | Low | High (Standard mesh tools) |
Composition Box:
Along with all other project teams, my team created a Composition Box, which is a big poster with all our initial brainstorms.

Housekeeping items:
- Teammates completed a survey that the producer created. The survey gathered important contact information, as well as some thoughts on their working style and aspirations/fears for this project. Some interesting observations of the results:
- To answer the question: “Imagine it’s 14 weeks from now and this project didn’t work. What went wrong?” People mostly mentioned teamwork and scope.
- To answer the question: “What energizes you at work?” Some people are outcome-oriented, while others place an emphasis on morale.
- Confirmed temporary “core hours” as well as the semester’s “core hours”
- Definition of “core hours”: 25 hours where all teammates are present, sitting in their desks at the ETC, and working both collaboratively and independently on this project.
- Confirmed weekly meeting time with our advisors, John Dessler and Moshe Mahler.
