Week 1 – Context & Brainstorm

Hi! We’re Team HAI.

In this semester, we are working with Timothy Verstynen and Michael Tarr, CMU faculties from the Psychology and Neuroscience Institute. Our partners expect us to create a game to help neuroscientists experimenting on Human&Human, Human&AI, and AI&AI teams collaboration.

Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition (CNBC), where Timothy and Michael be part of, had also cooperated with previous ETC students in spring 2013.

Project Goal

Develope a dual-player game, where one player is the decider, another player is the suggester. The main task in the game is to navigate in a complex environment, and to forage for reward, at the same time, avoiding penalty.

Gameplay Essentials

Decider(D)

  • Has direct agency in game
  • Has access to partial, but comparatively less information (Exp. a,b)

Suggester(S)

  • Doesn’t have direct agency in game
  • Has access to partial, but comparatively more information (Exp. b,c,d)

Communication (D-S)

  • D and S is preferred to be separated in physical space.
  • The communication is preferred to be discrete. It should be non-verbal for this stage, but has a potential to support text in future.

Design Sprint: 1

Ideation & Paper Prototype

Raw, raw idea!
Making the fog on the map
Try to make foraging harder…

TasksMove aroundButton1: Reveal 8 cells surroundings for SButton2: Request location of reward from SObserve what’s revealedObserve position of DTap: Tell D the location of rewardButton: Tell D there is no reward in its sight
ProblemsToo much randomnessNot enough interaction;Too passive, always need to wait for D to explore; Not fun to play

Next Week, Maybe…

We can make Decider and Suggester see the same map?

We can make Decider see the reward, while Suggester see the penalty?

We should give Suggester more fun.

We can make Decider and Suggester both see a part of the goal (maybe a door and 3 keys)?

Develop a very basic game that meet our game essentials to iterate upon!
