Hi everyone, we are Spelunx! We are a group of 6 interesting people!
From the Ancient Greek σπῆλῠγξ (/spɛ̂ː.lyŋks/) meaning a cave or cavern, the goal of Spelunx is to fully explore the CAVERN – from the perspectives of technology, art, sound, game design, and experience design – and bring that knowledge back to the ETC community and beyond through a resilient and modular toolkit, inspiring example scenes, and design best practices documentation. We are a team of people with a passion for designing good tools that inspire and facilitate creativity.
Josh is interested in many things, and in particular how technology can be used as a tool to expand creativity and problem solving. Their long term goal is to bring more wonder and play to people’s lives.
Ling is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in environment design and technical art. She is passionate about using technology to create aesthetic worlds and immersive narratives.
Terri is a programmer who has always been fascinated with getting into the nitty gritty of how things work. She loves working with new technology and solving problems that make an impact.
She is currently the graphics programmer of Spelunx, working on new ways to bring make 3D stereoscopic head-tracking a reality in the Cavern.
Winnie comes from a background in Computational Math and has a minor in Dance. She is a programmer with user research interests. In Spelunx, she mainly focuses on audio research, gameplay programming, user research, and documentation.
Yingjie’s is passionate about creating human-centered technology that supports and augments human creativity and expression. Her work lives at the intersection of computer science, design, and visual arts, seeking to connect, aid, and delight through visual storytelling.
Mia is a versatile Technical Artist and VFX Artist from Beijing, with a rich cultural background shaped by her time living in Shanghai, New York, and Pittsburgh. With a solid foundation in Computer Science and Interactive Media, she also holds a minor in Psychology, which enhances her understanding of user experience and human behavior. Mia’s career spans both technical and creative domains, combining her skills in art and visual effects with a strong background in creative and art direction.
Drew Davidson is a professor, producer and player of interactive media. His background spans academic, industry and professional worlds and he is interested in stories and transformational experiences across texts, comics, games and other media. He explores the art, design, and science of making media that matters, working to expand our notions of what media are capable of doing, and what we are capable of doing with media. He is an expert in leading creative collaborations with interdisciplinary groups, orchestrating change, and building initiatives focused on making positive social impact. He is a Teaching Professor at the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University and is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Play Story Press, an open community publishing consortium, and the Well Played series and journal.
Mike is interested in the development and evaluation of transformational games, especially in the areas of education and health care. Mike joined the ETC Faculty in 2008, moving from Carnegie Mellon’s Computer Science Department where he was working at the intersection of speech recognition, image processing, and multimedia interface development and evaluation. As a member of the Informedia Digital Video Library research team, he received the Allen Newell Award for Research Excellence. Before that, from 1987 to 1997 he worked at the Software Engineering Institute at CMU. Mike received his Ph.D. from Georgia Tech in 1991 with a thesis examining dynamically generated digital video interfaces. Entertainment builds from experiences, and Mike loves to travel with his family, having enjoyed each of the 50 states in the U.S. on various journeys.

South Fayette High School is a public school in Pittsburgh committed to a future-focused, student-centered, and innovation-driven education for ALL learners.
They are the first high school to have built a CAVERN, and we are collaborating with Matthew Callison, Director of Innovation, Strategic Partnerships, and Instructional Technology of the school, and Stacey Barth, the teacher running a course called Building Virtual Worlds, where students learn to design immersive experiences and games that foster empathy, enhance storytelling, and open new pathways in digital media careers.
