After quarters, we are stepping into the development stage. As we aimed to have the prototype of the first and second mini game ready by week 6 for early playtesting, it is crucial that the team started our production.
Game Design
The team started to work on the second mini game design. We wanted the second game to focus on “foot cleaning” so we had a brainstorming meeting and make a quick decision of our narrative and the core gameplay.
After completing the first challenge, the player approaches a glowing portal and steps inside and is instantly transported into a microscopic world where they shrink down to a tiny size. With this size, the playernow find themselves facing a human-sized foot, which appears like a towering landscape from this new perspective.
The athlete has shrunk to this size for a special mission: to attack life-sized bacteria. Armed with a soap bar as the surfboard, the player’ll glide across the surface targeting the bacteria, which will burst into bubbles each time you attack them. The more bacteria you wipe out, the higher your score gets. But be careful—timing and control are key as you navigate the tricky bends.
With this shrinking mechanism, we hoped that they gain a better understanding of how germs hide in the smallest areas—which is the first barriers that we wanted to tackle!
We also discussed the settings of the outside world so that the connection between each mini games make sense. We planned to make the interactive world into a huge sports stadium, where there would be audience cheering and watching. There would be three doors in the middle, by opening each door, players would step into the three games. The scene behind each door could be as fantasized as we would like, which is perfect for our game direction. Also, the atmosphere of the sports stadium is also what we are looking for, so that the players could feel the sense of competition and glamorous when competing.
Art
Art Progress
This week, Regina built some 3D assets for mini game 1. With the sketches she drew, she make some great visual elements for the game.
Lawrence also made our game’s main character and also make some animations for it. This would be great to build up the visuals for game 1.
Programming
Tyler was wrapping up the development of Mini Game 1! The core game mechanisms are all ready and the playing experience was great!
Team Bonding Time!
Besides going to dinner, the team also spent time playing board game together. Professor Jonathan borrowed us some great transformational games that we should try and find some insights from. The team chose to play “”, which is a board game where the players are all manga artists and have to complete their drawing within a specific amount of time and prompts. The game was really fun and the team had a great time together.
Dinner at African Eats Cusine
We also had dinner together. We went to African Eats Cusine, which is located at Squire Hill, to taste some authentic African dishes. It was a unique experience, the taste and the texture of the food was really cool (and spicy). Spending the night with the team was great! We also had matcha desert together, what a perfect ending!
For next week’s goal, the team hope that we could have a more certain direction of the arts. We are also going to work on the third game design, which would be the grand finale of the game.
