Week 2 – User Research & Analysis

The team had 4 internal meetings and 1 weekly instructor meeting for discussing the goal of the project. The progress went from Competitor Analysis to Prototype Initiation this week.

Here are the summaries of each meeting:

Jan 23, 2023  (Internal) XRt week 2 meeting 1

The team aligned the progress together today. Lena introduced the Slack workspace and all of the channels respectively.  The team confirmed the tasks for this week and decided the assignment for each member which competitor (product) they are going to evaluate from the 6 perspectives.

There are some technical research updates from Chenguang and Jiayu:

Chenguang mentioned that he has tested the AR foundation (the SDK we will use if we choose mobile AR as the platform) with Unity, and checked out the sample projects of how the SDK was used and what kind of interactions it could support. Lena and Chenguang will have a one-on-one technical catch-up to confirm more details.

Jiayu found excellent resources for the visuals of XR applications. He pointed out that a common issue of current AR applications is the inconsistency of illumination: the environment and the rendered models/scenes have different light settings. He did related research that would benefit our project. The documents will be uploaded to a corresponding folder in the shared drive afterward.

The team also scheduled a meeting internally on Jan.24 (Tue) for checking in on the competitor analysis and the reading materials. The team may have more questions to confirm after the meeting, those will be summarized and updated on Slack. There is also a plan to start the ideation process on Wednesday.

Jan 24, 2023  (Internal) XRt week 2 meeting 2

The team discussed the CPA research on Figma today. There were 5 main potential competitors the team was researching:

The team went through all of the competitors they have researched and decided to make more detailed research for the next day.

Jan 25, 2023(Internal) XRt week 2 meeting 3 (CPA continued)

The team elaborated more on the Competitor Analysis. To precisely evaluate each project, the team mainly decided to evaluate from 5 perspectives: interactive, immersive, accessible, high-quality, and useful. Some projects like ‘Hong Kong XR Museum’ contains both VR and AR part, which we evaluate separately in this case.

After voting and evaluating the competitors, we selected the best 2 references:

Google Arts and Culture (Mobile)
  • Interactive – 6
  • Immersive – 4
  • Accessible – 5
  • High-quality – 6
  • Useful – 5
This place [of mine]
  • Interactive – 5
  • Immersive – 4
  • Accessible – 6
  • High-quality – 5
  • Useful – 3

Therefore, the team decided to establish a rough prototype that uses the valuable insights gained from the references.

Jan 26, 2023(Internal) XRt week 2 meeting 4

The team created a material checklist for the ¼ walkaround. Also, the team has the logo and the design system ready for use as well.

The producer organized and made the presentation slides. The team is divided into producers, designers, and programmers to do presentation material preparation, interface design, and technical feasibility research.

Jan 27, 2023 Weekly meeting with Mo

The team communicated with Mo and Erica regarding the current process, including the research result, the definition of the project, and the plan for the ¼ walkaround.

Mo suggested that the team needs to clarify the product in a very simple way. That said, even though there is a lot of research done by the team, the team still needs to dig into the product itself to give an image to the ETC faculty.

Erica mentioned the arrangement of the workshop happening next week, the team expects to have a better sense after participating in the workshop, as well as receiving feedback from the ¼ walkaround. The producer explicitly expressed that the current prototype is aimed to receive more valuable feedback, rather than straightly entering the next stage of development. The idea is going to evolve and the feasibility research is happening at the same time.
