This week’s focus were research and ideation, including the generation and refinement of multiple versions of our early design prototype, as we aimed to solidify these iterations for the upcoming quarters. These coordinated efforts have played a crucial role in advancing our project’s development and ensuring it remains on track.
1.Research
The research part included:
- Talking to the client, both Mary Frances and Valerie.
- Understanding clients’ perspective, including project definition, project goals and target audience groups.
- Research into the context of African Americans’ struggle: racial injustice, discrimination, Jim Crow
- Research on the context of Mississippi John Hurt himself, including his lifestory, his music, the location and current stage of the museum.
- Shen concluded the research of his lifestory to a timeline, which was later verified with Mary on the phone.
Meeting with Mary
Mary Frances Hurt is the granddaughter of Mississippi John Hurt. She is also the president of the Mississippi John Hurt Foundation. She has dedicated her energy and resources to preserving the musical legacy of her grandfather.
Sy, one of the producers of the team, got to talk to Mary Frances, and they talked about Mary’s vision for the project as well as the missions for the foundation. They talked about some of the history of John Hurt. For detailed information, please refer to this note document.
2.Ideation
We came up with several ideas, discussed and summed them up into three main ideas.
i. Radio-Active (by Ezra and Rei)
ii. Garden of Music (by Shen)
iii. Record Player (by Sy and Play)

3.Plan For Next Week
- Be ready to present in the Quarter.
- Get feedback about our ideas to iterate the ideas to be more solidify by Friday.
- Run a fact check with Mary Frances about the authenticity of our research.
- Organize a list of Hardware Needed for the Project, solidify designs, getting ready for the production process in the next few weeks.
