Week 13 – Soft Opening

Time: 04/17-04/23

Summary:

This week marked a significant milestone for our team as we hosted a soft opening for our VR experience. We were thrilled to have 4 faculty members and 2 alumni join us in playtesting. They had a chance to experience our VR environment and engage in the storyline we’ve crafted. We observed their interactions and took notes on their reactions, which proved the project to be better received than during our public playtest on Apr.2.

Alumni Playtest

Production:

We are only 2 weeks away from the end of the semester! We are still working on polishing and will be doing so until the last day. VR in Unreal uses forward rendering to achieve better performance, however, it reduces the visual quality compared to deferred rendering. There has been a discussion to recreate the project without VR after the semester ends.

Design:

Based on the playtest, we decided to add more visual hints around surveillance.

Art/UI:

Our latest design for the spaces is shown below.

Programming:

Optimization achieved good progress last week. Almost all of the textures have been limited by a max size of 1024, considering VR HMD is smaller than 2K. The project runs smoothly on both Quest 2 (Link Cable) and Valve Index with a 3070 graphics card.

Audio:

Minor details, such as fans, ACs, have been added to the scene.

Future Plans:

  • Polishing
  • Prep for final presentation
