Week 1 – Hello World!

Intro

Hello! We are team Chatbot AI, a pitch project team at Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center for the Spring 2022 Semester.

We are developing a chatbot game about a witch trial that uses machine learning as a tool for narrative design. We want to explore how AI generation can be used in creating a complete narrative experience. In the final experience, the player will primarily interact by having typed one on one conversations with a cast of characters powered by GPT-3. Through these interview-style conversations, the player will eventually uncover the mystery in a small New England town and help decide its fate.

Timeline

We officially kicked off our project on Tuesday and met with our instructors Dave and Brenda to discuss our goal for the semester. Since then we’ve been busy getting things organized and setting the foundation for our work moving forward.

Narrative Design & Game Design

The narrative design and game design team have spent a lot of time brainstorming ideas for the story and gameplay, as well as collecting references to help us create a cohesive vision for the game.

Programming

In terms of programming, one of the questions we had was whether or not we could use Unity to interact with GPT-3. After some research and experimentation, we’re happy to report that the answer is yes! This is exciting news for us as it confirmed for us that Unity is a viable platform to develop our game. Below is a screenshot of a demo we developed that allows the user to interact with GPT-3 API based on a web-request method.

Art

Our art team has also been hard at work developing a mood board to help guide the visual direction of the game. We’re all in agreement that the art style should be consistent with the story and gameplay, and the mood board is helping us achieve that.

Production

We’ve also been setting up documents and processes to help keep everything organized and on track. This includes project timelines, task lists, and communication channels to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

All in all, it was a productive week and we’re looking forward to seeing the progress we make in the coming weeks. We’re all excited about the possibilities that this project holds and can’t wait to see it come to fruition
