Week 9 – Optimization

This week, the team worked primarily on optimizing existing features from half presentations and addressing feedback from professors.

First big optimization is the VR rowing boat experience. Engineers changed the row boat input-output format and fine tuned the parameters to ensure a much smoother boat rowing experience for the VR player.

Second big change is the level design. We now have a detailed level design where we carefully emphasized each encounter or experience that should happen. We also created a terrain that goes with the design and started to put art in it.

For the story, we have created an opening scene to explain the background, roles for each player and their goals. We also made a narration for the opening scene.

For art, we made a stylized shader on the trees and terrain. It is mainly a toon shader that will create different patterns of shade in reaction with lightning in real time. Below is a comparison of the before and after effect of the shader. Artist will continue working on the shader to create the best Amazon feeling.

Another big feature we implemented is the tutorial UI. Given the complexity of our interface and interactions, we need a clear and clean tutorial to provide instructions to the player. We provided a step by step incremental tutorial based on the player’s current condition.
