Week 6 consisted of meeting our client, Renee Cox in person and visiting our installation location The Mattress Factory with her. This week we were also preparing for our mid-term presentation which was due coming Monday.

We started the week with hosting Renee at the ETC and presenting our projection demos.

Narrative

The 2 interactions that we presented – Pac Man and Tree, inspired Renee’s narrative for the exhibit. Combined together, they reminded her of the history of lynching of African American. The tree representing the tree of life and the Pac Man [is the outside attacker] eating the man from the tree to fulfil his nutrition. After eating a certain amount of fruit( represented by the men on tree) the men on the tree will start to “revolt” and ”escape”. They are regurgitated by the Pac Man and they run away.

Demo of the narrative

Journey Map

We visited our location at the Mattress Factory with Renee and partnered with her to design the journey map. The space we had were two consecutive rooms at the Annex Gallery. We will use one room for immersive projection mapping and the other room for interactive projections.

The first space will have a semitransparent film in the middle of the room with interactive projection of the Pac man eating the Tree. The projections will be visible on both sides of the screen. Guests can trigger and control the tree and pac-man respectively. The design will also control the crowds in the space to optimize their experience.

As the above render shows, guests can see from both sides of the screen and they will have the idea of the others controlling different interactions.
Guest 1 will be able to control the Pac Man from spot 1. After walking to spot 2, they can trigger the tree and notice the relation between the two artworks.
There will be a skeleton in the interaction for indirect control of telling them about how many people can be included in the interaction.

After experiencing the first room the guests are led into the other room by the projection of a running man.

The second room consists of an immersive projection mapping experience with projections on 5 walls with a bench where the guests can sit and feel immersed in the world of Renee’s works.

Along with designing the space we culminated the week working on our 1/2s presentation slides and rehearsal.
