Beyond TCG is an experimental card game that lets players bring physical cards onto a digital screen, combining the best of both mediums to create an immersive TCG experience unlike anything else. By placing cards with conductive glyphs on the back, The Board console can recognize cards, render them on the digital screen, track gameplay, and create exciting visuals that bring the TCG fantasy to life. Instead of simply imagining a powerful spell destroying enemy units, players can watch as their opponent’s defenses are razed from the battlefield.
Beyond TCG also pushes the technology of The Board itself. Existing games on The Board are designed around small game pieces, but we are exploring how these pieces can become flat cards that can be shuffled, stacked into a deck, and collected in a card binder. We have experimented with a variety of card and glyph materials to tackle this unique engineering challenge and make physical cards work seamlessly with the digital system.
Our project takes on the technical, production, and design challenges of creating a new medium for interactive entertainment. Beyond TCG aims to go beyond expectations for trading card games and create something extraordinary.
