1/16/23-1/22/23

Summary of the Week

For our first week, our team focused on getting to know each other, understanding what was expected of our project and setting ourselves up for success for the semester.

Getting to know our team

Before we got started on our project, we spent time getting to know each. We shared our background and why we were excited about being part of this project. We talked about different bonding activities we might participate in and are currently looking into potentially taking a glass blowing class.

Picking our name

When it came to picking our name we wanted something that stayed with the theme of change. At first we thought of Prometheus, the Greek god who brought fire to the humans and brought about change, but it didn’t really fit. We brainstormed more into the meaning of change and we started to think about how change is ongoing and that brought up the idea of Pi and how it goes on forever. This was our name temporarily, but as one of our team members pointed out, it reminded them of math and just had an overall boring feel to it. Eventually this led us to the Fibonacci Sequence and the idea of the ongoing spiral that is found in nature. We really liked the idea that this was like a ripple effect, representing how change can begin and grow. We looked at many of these spirals in nature, but when we found the nautilus we all really loved the name and the rest is history.

Meeting with our advisors

We met with Brenda and Dave, who will be our advisors on our project this semester. They gave us a basic overview of the expectations of our project and informed us that our experience will need to address one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. As a team we reviewed the topics and descriptions and started to brainstorm ideas.

Research on past project

In order to get a sense of what the project would be like, we did research on past Games for Change projects from previous years’ festivals. We looked into PC platform games as well as XR games and several games caught our attention. We studied how those games managed to create a joyful gameplay experience while maintaining an educational purpose.

Schedule

We discussed our core hours based on our individual class schedule. We would like to meet everyday in a week so that we can keep up on the same page. We negotiated with mentors and clients to set up the weekly meeting on Tuesday because we would like to have some suggestions and feedback at the beginning of a week so that we can adjust and work based on those for the rest of the week.

Tech and room supplies

We filled a list of tech supplies that our artists need including tablets and adaptors. We checked the meeting supplies like wipers and markers as well. We tested the meeting system including a web camera, a TV, and a pc to make sure all equipment is in good condition. Then we realized that the pc was broken and got a replacement from IT.

What went well

The first week went really well. We got a chance to get to know each other and start building a foundation that will set us up for success this semester.

Next steps

Next week we are going to learn about the Transformational Framework and focus on brainstorming ideas and see how they might fit within the UN goals.
