Summary of the Week

This week we focused on getting the foundation of our project established. We met with our client at Games for Change, learned about the Transformational Framework and started narrowing down our topic choice. The artists have also started working on the logo, but are holding off on the poster until we have our topic figured out.

Meeting with Games for Change

This week we met with our client, Michaela Ternasky-Holland at Games for Change. We discussed project expectations and she also shared information about the Games for Change festival, which our team will be attending this July in New York City. We know that we will have a 2×3 meter space located in the XR for Change Arcade, which will be very similar to our BVW festival set-up. Overall she is very open to our ideas and the game platform and is more focused on us creating a quality experience.  She is an expert in the XR field and we are looking forward to receiving her feedback in our development process.

Learning about the Transformational Framework

We met with Dave to get a breakdown of the Transformational Framework and to learn how to apply it to our project. This framework was specifically designed to help guide project development so that you can make sure you are creating an experience that actually helps to create real change. Dave really stressed the importance of focusing on completing the framework before beginning development and to make sure that we continue to refer back to this to ensure we are sticking to our goal of transforming and not get sidetracked on making a certain feature just because it would be fun. As we narrow down our topic we will begin making our first draft.

Getting organized

When we first began organizing our tasks we were using Trello to help keep track of everything, but it still felt disorganized. Then during the producer roundtable, someone mentioned that they really enjoyed using Monday to help them organize their team, so we decided to give it a try. We have found this to be a much more efficient tool because now it is much easier to see who is assigned to what task and we can sort them by dates.

Brainstorming topics

We made a lot of progress during our brainstorming this week. Everyone brought different topic ideas to the discussion and we wrote them down and then connected them to the UN goals. We then put them on paper to take to the composition box workshop where we were able to get feedback from our classmates. This was a great way for us to get people’s initial reactions to the topics and to help us to start narrowing down our ideas.

Pro/Con List

After many discussions, we decided to make a pro/con list for our top choices, which were biodiversity hotspots, dark skies and abandoned pets. We are going to continue to do more research on the topics and are hopeful that we will be able to move forward with a chosen topic soon.

What went well

There were a lot of important meetings this week where we learned about the Transformational Framework and met with Games for Change. It feels like we are really starting to move forward and are making progress.

Next Steps

We will be focused on getting our topic figured out and start preparing for Quarters. We want to make sure that we have a solid presentation so that we can get as much feedback as possible from the faculty.
