Week 2 – Sep 9th

Hello!

Here are some highlights of this week:

  • Attended Mike Christel and John Dessler’s Playtest Workshop.
  • Collectively brainstormed +45 ideas.
  • Finished our team logo and began designing the poster and half sheet.
  • Our programmer, Lucy, began working on a Depth Lens as one of the projects.
  • We attended the Pittsburgh Zoo’s Lantern Festival and captured footage using the SwipeVideo app.

Playtest Workshop

Prior to the Playtest Workshop, we were tasked to create a composition board as a team. Putting down certain ideas or goals for our project onto paper was a good exercise in organizing our thoughts. At the workshop, our peers from different projects were able to comment on our boards with any questions, or ideas.

The most common comment we received on our board was concerning our ideas for using the technology in a theater setting. Our peers liked the concept of “backstage access” to performances.

The Lantern Festival

The Lantern Festival was a great spectacle of lights, though arguably lenient on the cultural aspects of Asian lanterns. As it took place at the PGH Zoo & Aquarium we were all able to see some animals (a lion, a tiger, no bears, oh my).

We each used the SwipeVideo app to synch our phones so that we could capture video from different viewpoints at the same time. The footage was then imported into the SV platform and made into a single swipeable video.

A few things we noticed:

  • There is an auto flash that goes off at the beginning of each video. This meant that it alerted other Lantern Festival goers that we were all taking a photo or video.
  • There is a 5-second count in and countdown, and it is easy to forget that the video is still recording after you press stop record.
  • Once the videos were imported, the videos were slowed down and there seemed to be some lag.
  • Swiping between the videos was somewhat sensitive as it would easily skip an angle with one single swipe.
